Freedom Nothing in this world is given more importance than freedom. Freedom of speech, freedom of information, freedom of press, religious freedom, financial freedom, debt freedom, free love, free sex; the list goes on. Simple freedom is a key ingredient in the pursuit of happiness, luxury lifestyle choice, and true wealth. Our western society is largely constructed to provide protection for the innocent. We have building codes, driving codes, employment law, and various statutes regarding almost any activity one may involve oneself with during the course of one’s life. These laws are commonly held as good for the reason that they are structured to provide protection for the innocent. Traffic laws protect us when we are driving. Building codes protect us when we build or purchase a property. Employment law protects employees from unscrupulous employers. There is however a cost to this protection and this cost is a limitation of our freedom. You may not legally build a sub code home even if it is all you want. You are prohibited from varying your employment arrangements outside of the legal guidelines even if this arrangement would be to your liking. Your freedom is limited by the desire for safety. It then becomes obvious that safety and freedom are diametrically opposed. It therefore follows that in any given situation if you want to experience freedom there will be a cost and that cost will be an element of danger. Imagine a line with safety at one end and freedom at the other. Each one of us whether we realise it or not is positioned somewhere along this safety versus freedom line. Incidentally this law applies no less to the concept of financial freedom than it does to any other aspect of freedom. To attain financial freedom you will simply have to take more risks than someone who wishes to remain a salaried worker. There is no way around this. Position yourself at the risk end of the line and you’ll make some big wins and take some big hits. Position yourself at the safety end of the line and you won’t take any hits but you’ll make only small gains or possibly none at all. So if freedom involves such risk why do we hold it so dear? For no reason less than the knowledge that you are in charge of your own destiny. It is the empowerment granted by this knowledge which is your most precious possession of all.
